First Person Story
I’ve been making guitars since 1991.
Maybe my way is the same as others.
As a child, at some point, you start to like music, and eventually, you fall in love with it. Then you want to play it yourself. Soon after, you get the itch to modify your guitar—because you think you're the smartest and know how to do it better. Especially since my father had the same itch, and he had a plane, a chisel, an emery wheel, and three drills. Modifying, modifying... Of course, it didn't stop there. Your school, university, and daily job continue in parallel—a fairly ordinary life. But your hands remain restless. Here and there, you stumble upon magazines, rare cool guitars—and the dream grows stronger. So, you dive into creating. Naturally, you pull in all your friends and acquaintances: someone brings tuning pegs, someone pickups, someone makes a bridge, someone else chrome-plates it, and so on with everything.
You keep going, keep going, keep going. And finally, it's done. (1992) You wander around town, showing off your guitar, taking pictures, bragging... just having a great time. And then, humanity takes an unexpected turn: your guitar gets sold! That’s it. There's no turning back. Your education and your good old engineering job are shot. Here we go. Only repairs, electric guitars, bass guitars.
In 2002, Kibin Guitars is officially founded, and I started building guitars professionally, full-time. My friend Alex from the USA sent me the holy bible of all acoustic guitar makers: Guitarmaking: Tradition and Technology by Cumpiano & Natelson.
Mother Nature sometimes plays cruel jokes, but fools and beginners are often lucky. One way or another, my first classical guitar turned out great (2003). Naturally, when I started making the second one, I felt like the smartest person who already knew everything. And of course, that feeling was temporary. From then on, everything came through blood, sweat, and tears. Nothing can replace experience; you have to earn it by studying, learning, listening, and creating.
In 2005, I bought the building that now houses my workshop.
In 2011, I was the first luthier from the post-Soviet countries to participate in Musikmesse in Frankfurt as an exhibitor, bringing my guitars.
Today, I have a well-equipped workshop with numerous machines and a stock of wood in case of an emergency in India. All guitars from here are handmade, but reasonably priced.
